New Hope Arts' 21st Annual Juried Sculpture Exhibition features over 90 art works from 58 artists. Sculpture at New Hope Arts is always a much anticipated and enthusiastically received presentation for artists and viewers alike. The exhibitors selected from almost eighty submissions include innovative contemporary artists who work in a wide variety of media. This year’s juror, George R. Anthonisen, assembled an exceptional, diverse and entertaining display.

 

 

George R. Anthonisen's public works are in permanent collections of the U. S. Capitol,Washington, DC; World Health Organization, Geneva, Switzerland; New York's Carnegie Hall; Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Silver Spring, Maryland; in Philadelphia at Please Touch Museum, Woodmere Art Museum and Curtis Institute of Music; James A.Michener Art Museum, Doylestown, Pennsylvania; Berman Museum of Art, Collegeville, Pennsylvania; Center for Interfaith Relations, Louisville, Kentucky; Clark Atlanta University, Atlanta, Georgia; University of Alaska at Fairbanks, Jackie Robinson Museum, New York, NY and others. From April 20 to October 14, 2024, Michener Art Museum hosts George R. Anthonisen: Meditations on the Human Condition, guest curated by Lisa Tremper Hanover. The exhibition features more than forty sculptures, frescoes and maquettes, inside and outside the museum. A richly illustrated hardcover book of the same title by Michener Museum and University of Pennsylvania Press accompanies this exhibition and may be ordered directly from Michener Gift Shop, your local bookstore, Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Target.

Joshua Lessard, AIA is an award-winning designer, artist, non-profit leader, and registered architect practicing in the Greater Philadelphia region. His design work has been included among USA Today's list of the best museum exhibitions in the United States, and featured in the New York Times, Metro US, the Art Newspaper, and the Philadelphia Inquirer. Joshua currently sits on the Executive Team of the Michener Art Museum as the Director of Exhibitions and serves as a Consulting Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. He further complements professional museum practice with teaching and writing on topics of conservation, regional building traditions, and legal advocacy. To better serve his cultural heritage and exhibition projects, he earned a degree from the graduate program at the Law School of the University of Pennsylvania in 2020. He is a contributor to the expanded edition of the Encyclopedia of Vernacular Architecture of the World (Bloomsbury, 2024), stemming from previous fieldwork documenting changes to vernacular building and artistic traditions in Nepal and Mongolia. Joshua remains close to Philadelphia’s academic community, having taught over 30 courses in the Department of Architecture, Design, and Urbanism at Drexel University.
