Who is Jack Rosen?
New Hope, PA photographer Jack Rosen (1923 - 2006) is considered by many to be one of the best "unknown" photographers of the second half of the twentieth century. Acclaimed primarily for his photos of New Hope and Bucks County, PA, Jack also was an outstanding photographer of celebrities, and his humorous yet telling editorial photos reveal his sense of justice, while appealing to our higher sense of ourselves.
Jack referred to himself as "New Hope's oldest streetwalker", and could usually be spotted somewhere in town wearing at least two cameras, shooting all the things many of us walked right past but that Jack saw and captured. His body of work is a record of our lives for the period from the late 1950s to the early 2000s, and includes extensive documentation of Bucks County, New Hope, and the early Levittown years.
Jack Rosen was noted for his "Slide Show" presentation given around town. Using a carosel projector Jack would set up and entertain with an array of images both famous and unknown. Another note worthy event was the Jack Rosen print sale a John & Peter's on Main Street New Hope. Thousand of prints would be available in bins to peruse and buy for $5 or $10 a piece, while Florence Rosen collected at the check out desk.
All of the images in the video have been provided by Rick Rosen. With the generous sponsorship of the Bucks County Vistors Bureau, a walk-about map illustrating the actual sites of Jack's images is available.
